The works in LOOSE TOOTH are informed by my background in photography. Typically, I use a small contact print selected for its formal arrangement and geometric qualities as reference image for creating an under-painted framework. Similar to the way a photographer frames the messiness of the world into a contained image, these works on canvas organize cut pieces and painterly gesture to form a psycho scape informed by our constant contemporary visual stimulation.
LOOSE TOOTH marks a foundation and a departure, reflecting my shift to painting. My process capitalizes on my interest in the chance happenings that occur through cutting and rearranging collage elements with a painted surface. Like a young tooth worked loose, the pieces in this show reflect a process of letting the old recede to make way for the new.
LOOSE TOOTH is an exhibition of new work at ALPACA in Albuquerque, New Mexico. LOOSE TOOTH is on display from October 11 until November 1, 2024.
